Kitchen fitting across Stockton-on-Tees

A kitchen is the most trade-heavy room in the house. Joinery, plumbing, electrics, gas, tiling and decoration all meet in one small space, usually in that order and usually against a deadline. The sequence, and where the time goes

The order never changes, because each stage is held in place by what it physically depends on: units cannot be levelled until the first fix is buried, the worktop cannot be templated until the units are standing where they will finish, and tiling cannot start until the top is down. What varies is which stage bites, and in Stockton it is usually one of two. On the Oxbridge and Grangefield terraces it is base units: walls that were never square and have moved since turn levelling and scribing into most of a day rather than an hour. On the Fairfield and Hartburn semis it is first fix, because a through-lounge opening has to be designed, calculated and approved before a single unit is ordered, and a kitchen bought for a closed galley will not suit the room that opening creates. Everywhere else in the borough, the stage that actually costs people time is the worktop template: stone and composite are fabricated off site, and that gap is a fortnight of living without a sink.

Buying the kitchen: retailer, trade-only, or us

There are three routes and they are not equivalent. A retailer sells you the kitchen and subcontracts somebody to fit it. A trade-only supplier such as Howdens will not sell to you at all, so the account is held by a fitter or builder and the kitchen is bought through them. Or one firm supplies and fits.

We hold trade accounts and we will also quote fitting on its own for a kitchen you have already bought, which is the commonest call we get in Stockton: the kitchen is ordered, the retailer's fitter has a date three months out, and the units are sitting in a garage. That is a perfectly good job and we price it as one.

What the third route buys is a single answer to the question of whose fault something is. Where the goods and the labour come from two firms, a damaged door or a mis-drilled carcass turns into a conversation between them with you in the middle. Where they come from one, it does not.

When we are the wrong choice

We will not book a Stockton fitting week against a kitchen that has not landed yet, and we will not fit a layout we already know will not work. Those two rule out most of what we turn down.

• If the kitchen has not been delivered and you want a firm start date, we will give a provisional one, not a promise. Booking trades around an undelivered kitchen is how a job ends up half-fitted at Christmas.
• If you want the cheapest fitting price, we will not be it. Our number includes the electrician, the Gas Safe connection and the making good. A new circuit for an induction hob or a board replacement is notifiable under Part P, and if you smell gas at any point during a hob change, the HSE sets out what to do and it does not begin with ringing the fitter. Cheaper fit-only quotes frequently exclude all three, and you find out when the hob cannot be connected.
• If you only need one door or one appliance swapped, an independent joiner will be quicker and cheaper.
• If the layout you have chosen will not work, we will say so at survey rather than fit it.
