Norton kitchens are mostly period kitchens, and period kitchens are mostly about the room rather than the units. In the Georgian and Victorian property around the Green, the kitchen is frequently a rear room or a later addition with an uneven floor, solid walls, a chimney breast in an inconvenient place, and services that arrived long after the house did.

What Norton properties throw up
Floors that are not level. Period floors rarely are, and a run of units is unforgiving about it. Scribing and packing is done properly at the time rather than discovered when a stone worktop is templated and will not sit.
Chimney breasts. They frequently sit exactly where the ideal run would go. Removing one is a structural job requiring an engineer and building control, not something to decide on the day. Designing around it is often the better answer and it should be a deliberate choice.
Services added later. In older property the kitchen has usually acquired its water, waste and electrics over time rather than by design. What is behind the units matters before the layout is finalised, particularly for a dishwasher or an American-style fridge freezer. Two things turn a replacement into notifiable work: a new circuit or board change, which is Part P and the usual consequence of an induction hob, and a relocated sink, which is altered drainage and therefore building regulations work through Stockton's building control.
Extraction through solid walls. Getting a properly vented extractor out of a solid-walled kitchen takes planning. Recirculating hoods are the easy answer and a poor one, and we would rather find a real route at survey.
Later housing. Around Norton Grange the job is the familiar one: sound construction, a builder's kitchen at the end of its life, and often a wall worth removing.
The mistake we see most
Appliances ordered before the survey. Integrated appliances have exact housing dimensions, and American-style fridge freezers need width and usually a water supply that does not exist yet. Send us the list before you buy.
A plumbed fridge freezer also needs a supply teed off and a shut off valve somewhere you can reach, which is a decision to make while the floor is still up rather than after the units are in.
When we are the wrong choice
If you have bought a kitchen that will not fit the room, we will say so at the quote and that is not always welcome. We also will not fit a worktop over a run we know is out of level, or recirculate an extractor in a room that could take a real duct.
How the job runs
We survey the room as built and confirm what is structural. You get a written quote listing what is and is not included, which you can accept online. We book a start date and confirm the day before. Strip-out, first fix, units, worktop, appliances, tiling and making good run in sequence with our own trades, photographed as they go, with the site cleared each evening.
Where a wall or chimney breast is coming out, the building and renovation work is quoted in the same document, and the new circuits are run by our own electricians.

How long does a kitchen fitting take?
Five to ten working days on site. A like-for-like replacement is at the short end. Moving the sink, the hob or a wall pushes it to the long end, because each brings drainage, gas or electrical work with it. The working-day count goes on the quote.
Can you fit a kitchen in a Victorian house?
Yes, and it is most of what we do here. The differences are practical rather than dramatic: floors that are not level, solid walls that need the right fixings, services that were run to the room later, and often a chimney breast that decides where the run can go. All of that is established at survey.
Can you fit a kitchen I have bought from a showroom?
Yes, and in Norton we do it regularly. Send us the plan before you order. The two things worth checking are whether the plan matches the room as built rather than as measured, and whether appliance positions assume services that are not there yet.
What about stone worktops?
We fit them, and the sequence differs. Stone and composite are templated after the units are installed and level, then fabricated and fitted a week or two later. That gap is normal, and it needs planning for because you are without a worktop in between.
Can we open the kitchen into the dining room?
Often, and in these houses it is worth checking whether the wall is structural and whether there is a chimney breast involved, because removing one of those is a different job again. A structural engineer sizes any beam and building control is notified.
Do you handle the electrics and the gas?
Yes. Kitchen work nearly always touches both. Our own electricians do circuits and sockets, and anything involving the gas supply is done by a Gas Safe engineer, so the job does not stall between trades.
