The kitchens in Billingham's estate housing were designed for how people cooked in the 1950s and 60s: a separate small kitchen, a separate small dining room, a larder, and storage put wherever it fitted. That last option is worth asking about. If the carcasses are sound and only the fronts and worktop are tired, replacing everything is spending money on boxes that were fine.
What Billingham houses throw up

That is normal work, but it has to be in the quote rather than discovered.
Floors. Original solid floors and later screeds are rarely flat by modern standards, and a run of units is unforgiving about it. Scribing and packing is done properly at the time, not noticed when the worktop goes on.

Appliances bought before the survey. Integrated appliances have specific housing sizes and American-style fridge freezers need width and often a water supply. Send us the list before you order.
When we are the wrong choice
If you have bought a kitchen that will not fit the room, we will say so at the quote, and that is not always what people want to hear. We also will not take out a wall without knowing whether it is holding the house up.
How the job runs
We survey the room as built and confirm what is structural. You get a written quote listing what is and is not included, which you can accept online. We book a start date and confirm it the day before. Strip-out, first fix, units, worktop, appliances, tiling and making good run in sequence with our own trades, photographed as they go, and the site is cleared each evening.
If a wall is coming out, the building and renovation side of the work is quoted in the same document rather than separately, and the new circuits are run by our own electricians.

How long does a kitchen fitting take?
Five to ten working days on site. A like-for-like replacement is at the short end. Moving the sink, the hob or a wall puts you at the long end because those bring drainage, gas and electrical work with them. The working-day count goes on the quote.
Can you knock through into the dining room?
Often, and it is one of the most common changes in Billingham because the original layouts separated a small kitchen from a small dining room. Whether the wall is load-bearing decides everything: if it is, a structural engineer sizes the beam and building control is notified. We establish that before quoting, not during.
Can you fit a kitchen I have bought from a showroom?

Yes. Kitchen work nearly always touches both. Our own electricians do new circuits and sockets, and anything involving the gas supply is done by a Gas Safe engineer. That is why the job does not stop for a week between trades.
What about the old wall units nobody can reach?
Worth rethinking rather than replacing like for like. The original Billingham kitchens put a lot of storage at a height that only works for some people. If we are replacing everything anyway, drawers low down usually beat cupboards high up.
