The kitchens we fit in Guisborough split fairly cleanly between two jobs. On the estates at Enfield Chase, Galley Hill and the newer developments, it is usually a replacement: the original builder's kitchen has done fifteen or twenty years, the carcasses are tired and the layout is basically right. In the older stone and Victorian properties around Belmangate and the town centre, it is more often a remodel, because the kitchen is in a room that was never designed to be one.

That last one is worth asking about. If the carcasses are sound and only the fronts and worktop are tired, replacing the whole kitchen is spending money on boxes that were fine.
What Guisborough houses throw up
Rooms that were not kitchens. In the older cottages the kitchen is frequently a converted scullery or an addition on the back, with solid walls, an uneven floor and services that were run wherever was easiest at the time. The survey matters more here than the catalogue does.
Level floors, or the absence of them. Older properties rarely have a level floor, and a run of units is unforgiving about it. That is a scribing and packing job done properly at the time, not something to notice when the worktop goes on.
Estate kitchens reaching the same age. Where a development went up in one phase, the kitchens wear out together. The common pattern is sound carcasses, failed hinges and drawer runners, a worktop that has swollen at the sink, and an integrated appliance nobody can now get parts for.
Extensions. A good proportion of Guisborough kitchen work is part of a larger build. If that is your situation, quote them together: the first fix for the kitchen wants to happen while the walls are open, not after they are plastered.
The thing that goes wrong most often
Appliances ordered before the survey. Integrated appliances have specific housing dimensions, and American-style fridge freezers need both the width and a water supply that may not exist. We would rather see the list before you buy than work around it afterwards.

If you want the cheapest fit and you have already bought a kitchen that will not work in the room, we will tell you at the quote and you may not want to hear it. We also will not fit a worktop over a run we know is out of level just to save a day.
How the job runs
We survey the room as built. You get a written quote listing the work and what is and is not included, which you can accept online. We book a start date and confirm the day before. Strip-out, first fix, units, worktop, appliances, tiling and making good run in sequence with our own trades, photographed as they go, with the site cleared each evening.
If the plumbing elsewhere in the house needs attention, mention it at the quote stage: it is cheaper while the water is already off.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a kitchen fitting take?
Most kitchens are five to ten working days on site. A like-for-like replacement in a modern house is at the short end. Moving the sink, the hob or a wall puts you at the long end, because those bring drainage, gas and electrical work with them. We give the working-day count on the quote.
Can you fit a kitchen I have bought from a showroom?
Yes, and we do it regularly. Send us the plan before you order rather than after. The two things worth checking are that the plan matches the room as built rather than as measured, and that appliance positions do not assume services that are not there.
Will I be without a kitchen the whole time?
You will be without a working kitchen for most of the fit. We usually leave the old sink connected as long as possible and get the new one live early, because a working tap and a kettle makes a week bearable. Tell us if somebody in the house needs more than that and we will plan around it.
Do you handle the electrics and the gas?
Yes. Kitchen work almost always touches both. Our own electricians handle new circuits and sockets, and anything involving the gas supply, such as capping or moving a hob, is done by a Gas Safe engineer. That is why the job does not stop for a week waiting on another trade.
Can you move the sink to under the window?
Usually, but it is the change that costs the most for the least visible result, because it means new supply and waste runs with the right fall. Worth doing if you are staying. Rarely worth doing to sell.
What about the floor?
We lift the old covering and check the substrate before quoting a new floor. On older Guisborough properties with solid floors, and on any house where the previous fitter tiled straight onto boards that flexed, the substrate is the job and the tiles are the easy part.
