Decorating in Guisborough covers two quite different sorts of property, and the difference is almost entirely about what is under the paint. The estate housing at Enfield Chase and Galley Hill has plasterboard walls, modern skirtings and paintwork that is doing what it was designed to do. The older stone properties around Belmangate and the market place have lime plaster, solid walls, and in places a century of previous coatings that behave in ways modern paint does not expect.

What Guisborough properties throw up
Lime plaster and breathable finishes. Older solid-walled properties were built to let moisture move through the fabric and out again. Sealing them with a modern impermeable paint traps it, and the damage shows up as blown plaster and damp patches that no amount of repainting fixes. Textured ceiling coatings. Common in properties decorated in the 1970s and 1980s. Anything applied before 2000 may contain asbestos and should be tested before it is disturbed. That is a safety point rather than a sales one: dry scraping an unknown textured coating is the wrong thing to do.
New-build filler cracks. On the newer estates the recurring job is not worn-out paint but settlement cracking at the plasterboard joints, and corners that were taped rather than properly finished. Filling those properly takes a day nobody budgeted for and is the difference between a good result and a passable one.
Exposure toward the moors. Guisborough is inland enough to escape the salt that shortens repaint cycles on the coast, but properties on the higher, more exposed edges of town take more weather than the sheltered streets do. South and west elevations go first.

If you want one coat over a wall that needs filling, we are not the firm. We also will not paint over damp without establishing where the water is coming from, because that is covering up a problem and charging you for it.
How the job runs
We look at the rooms, agree the scope and the finish, and quote in writing. Furniture is moved and sheeted, floors covered, and edges masked before anything is opened. Preparation is done properly, then coats go on with the drying time they actually need. We tidy each evening and the paint tins are labelled and left with you at the end.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to decorate a room?
A straightforward room with sound walls is usually one to two days including preparation and two coats. A room that needs filling, sanding, sealing or paper stripped first can easily be three or four. Almost all of the variation is preparation, which is also the part that decides how it looks in five years.
Do I need to move my furniture?
Move small and valuable items yourself if you can. We will move and sheet the larger furniture, cover the floors and mask what needs masking. We would rather spend twenty minutes protecting a room than an afternoon cleaning it.
My house has textured coating on the ceilings, can you remove it?
Carefully, and not before it is checked. Textured coatings applied before 2000 may contain asbestos, and removing them without knowing is genuinely unsafe. If yours is that era, it should be tested before anybody scrapes it. Where it is safe, the choices are removal or overboarding, and overboarding is often the tidier answer.
How often does exterior paintwork need doing?
Inland, a properly prepared exterior usually gets several years before it needs attention, and south-facing elevations always go first because of the sun. Guisborough is far enough off the coast to avoid the worst of the salt exposure that shortens cycles in Redcar and Marske, but exposure toward the moors brings its own weather.
Can you paint stonework?
It is possible and it is often a mistake. Painting stone or lime-mortared walls with a modern impermeable coating traps moisture inside the wall, which does more damage than weathering ever would. If the stonework looks tired the honest answer is usually cleaning and repointing rather than paint, and we will say so.
Do you do wallpapering?
Yes, hanging and stripping. Feature walls and full rooms both. The preparation matters more with paper than with paint, because paper shows every defect in the wall behind it once the light catches it.
