Old wiring is a Middlesbrough speciality
A lot of the town's housing predates modern wiring regulations by decades, and the era of the house is a fair predictor of what the test will find.
The Victorian streets around Ayresome, Linthorpe and Albert Park. These still turn up rubber-insulated cable, which goes brittle with age and cracks when disturbed, and lighting circuits with no earth at all. That second one matters the moment somebody fits a metal light fitting to a ceiling rose that was never earthed, which is a very common way for a decorating job to create an electrical problem.
The 1930s semis in Acklam, Longlands and Marton. Often still running fuse boxes with rewirable fuses that should have retired years ago, and frequently with too few sockets for how the rooms are actually used now. Extension leads daisy-chained around a living room are a symptom of a circuit layout designed for a house with one television and no computers.
The newer estates in Coulby Newham, Hemlington and Park End. Generally sound installations reaching the age where the consumer unit is the oldest component in the house. These are usually board changes rather than rewires, which is a much smaller job and a much smaller number.

The everyday work, done tidily

- If you have no power at all and your neighbours do not either, it is the network, not your installation. Ring 105. It is free and it reaches your local distribution operator directly.
- If you want a rewire quoted over the phone, we will not do it. Any firm that prices a rewire without testing is either guessing high to be safe or guessing low and planning to find extras later.
- If you want the cheapest EICR in Middlesbrough, we are probably not it, and it is worth knowing why cheap ones are cheap. A fast test that codes everything as C3 produces a satisfactory report and a happy landlord, and it is worthless.
- If you need us to certify work another electrician did, we cannot. We can inspect and report on it, which is a genuinely useful thing to buy, but certification belongs to whoever did the installation.

What does a C1, C2 or C3 mean on my EICR?
C1 means danger present and it gets made safe before we leave. C2 means potentially dangerous and it has to be fixed for the report to be satisfactory. C3 means improvement recommended, and it does not make the report unsatisfactory. You can decide on that one at your own pace. Anyone quoting to fix every C3 as though it were urgent is selling you work you do not need yet.
Do I need a rewire or just a new fuse board?
They are different jobs and the test tells us which. A consumer unit change protects circuits that are themselves sound. If the cable behind the walls has perished or has no earth, a new board is a new lid on an old problem. We test first and tell you which one you are actually looking at, including when the answer is the cheaper one.
How long does a full rewire take?
In an occupied family home, usually one to two weeks depending on size, plus making good afterwards. We can phase it room by room so you are not living without power, which takes longer overall but keeps the house usable throughout.
Can you install an EV charger?
We can prepare the supply and install the circuit for one. Whether your incoming supply and consumer unit can take it without an upgrade is the question worth answering before you buy a charger, and that is a short survey rather than a guess.
What is the difference between an electrician and an approved electrician?
Approved or registered means the electrician belongs to a government-authorised competent person scheme, such as NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA. Membership lets them self-certify notifiable work and issue the certificate directly, rather than paying building control to inspect it. An unregistered electrician may be perfectly skilled, but notifiable work they carry out has to be signed off separately, which costs you time and money and sometimes does not happen at all. That missing paperwork is what surfaces later when you sell the house.
Is there a list of registered electricians I can check?
Yes. Each competent person scheme publishes a searchable register, so you can confirm any electrician is currently registered before booking, in the same way you would check a Gas Safe card. It is worth doing. Registration lapses, and a certificate from someone no longer registered is worth considerably less than it looks.
How much do electricians charge per hour in the UK?
