What Stokesley property throws up
The pipe you own and cannot see. On a rural plot the supply from the boundary to the house can be a very long run under a drive or a field, and it belongs to the property rather than the water company. Two consequences follow. If you are buying out towards the villages, find out which system you have before you plan a bathroom.
Ground floors near the Leven. Parts of the town sit close to the river. It rarely affects the plumbing itself, but where a property has a flood history it is worth thinking about where the vulnerable parts of a heating and hot water system sit rather than replacing like for like without asking.
Emergencies
If water is coming out and you cannot stop it, the stopcock matters more than any plumber. Turn it clockwise and ring afterwards. If you have no water and neither do your neighbours, that is the supply rather than your plumbing, and your water company will tell you for nothing.

Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, turn the gas off at the meter control handle unless the meter is in a cellar, open windows and avoid electrical switches. A borehole or spring supply has no water company behind it, so the pump, the storage and any treatment are yours to maintain, and the pressure available shapes what fittings make sense. Where is the stopcock likely to be in an older Stokesley house?
Not reliably under the kitchen sink, because the kitchen was often added after the supply. In the older houses near the market place it turns up in a hall cupboard, under the stairs, or in a cellar head.
