What Marton systems throw up
Extensions bolted onto old circuits. The most common heating complaint in this suburb, and the one most often answered with the wrong solution. Microbore in the 1970s housing. Clean microbore is perfectly serviceable. Microbore that has run for decades without inhibitor is a restriction, and it sets a ceiling on what any boiler can deliver at the far end. Putting a new appliance onto a dirty system is how a new heat exchanger fails early, which is why cleaning belongs in the quote rather than being sold as an extra later.
Cylinders and loft tanks still in service. Plenty of these houses still run gravity hot water. Whether to keep it, upgrade it or move to a combi is a real decision with arguments both ways, and the mains flow rate at the kitchen tap is the measurement that settles it.

A gas safety check on every appliance and flue you provide is a legal requirement at least once a year, and the record goes to the tenant within 28 days. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away. Do not touch electrical switches, open the windows and doors, and turn the gas off at the meter if you can safely reach it. Once the supply has been made safe, our Gas Safe registered engineers can take on any repair that is needed.
Should I convert from a cylinder to a combi?
Sometimes, and it is not automatic. A combi removes the loft tank and the cylinder and frees an airing cupboard, which in a three-bedroom semi is a genuine gain. In a house where two showers are used at the same time, or where the mains flow rate is modest, it can be a downgrade in daily use. We measure the incoming flow before recommending either way rather than after.
The extension is always cold, is the boiler too small?
Usually not. In this housing the extension was frequently added by putting one more radiator on the end of an existing circuit, sometimes on microbore that cannot deliver much more heat. The fix is normally the emitter and the pipe feeding it rather than the appliance, and that is the cheaper job as well as the correct one.
There is an old flue behind the fireplace, does it matter?
It matters when a back boiler has been removed and the flue or the chimney has been left in an unclear state, which we still find in houses of this age. Any redundant gas point should be properly capped and the flue arrangement made safe and recorded. It is worth establishing at a service rather than at the point of sale.
How often should a boiler be serviced?
Annually. It is a condition of most manufacturer warranties, a legal requirement for rented property, and the only reliable way a small fault is found in October rather than becoming a cold house in January.
Do you charge to find the fault?
Fault-finding is agreed with you before we start, so the cost of the diagnosis is known up front. We will not quote a repair blind and then find the actual problem once the case is off, and we will not quote a replacement boiler without diagnosing what is wrong with the current one.
Can the boiler go in the garage?
